Alliumcepa is a bulbous biennial which is used as a medicinal plant. For any medicine to be effective, the authenticity of the drug that go into preparation has to be properly identified. This can be made possible to some extent by the chemical characterization of the drug. With this in view an attempt has been made to standardize the drug chemically. The physiochemical parameters and the spots obtained in TLC could be used effectively for the identification of drug. The TLC pattern can also used to detect the single drug Alliumcepa in the compound formulation 'Murivenna' and hence it help to standardize the formulation also. More specific and decisive parameters can be obtained by the use of sophesticated instruments, according to the principle that a standard fixed, should be that followed easily in any simple lab, the values obtained in the analysis would go a longway in the preliminary standardization of Alliumcepa.
